National Dairy Shrine Announces 2018 Core Scholarships

Denmark, WI. The National Dairy Shrine is pleased to announce the recipients of the Maurice Core Scholarships. These $1000 scholarships are given in honor of Maurice Core, the long-time Executive Secretary of the American Jersey Cattle Association, and former Executive Director of the National Dairy Shrine. The funds for this award were donated by the friends of Maurice Core. The Core Scholarships are given to freshman status students working toward a degree in dairy/animal science or related majors and demonstrating growing leadership skills.

Receiving Maurice Core $1000 Scholarships are Summer Henschel of Plymouth, Wisconsin, who is a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Dairy Science with a Pre-Vet Emphasis. Ms. Henschel has been very active in FFA activities and served as President of her chapter. In college she has been active in the Badger Dairy Club, Collegiate Farm Bureau, Collegiate FFA, Wisconsin Holstein & Brown Swiss Associations and the Association of Women in Agriculture. Summer would ultimately like to become a dairy veterinarian.

Next is Kalista Hodorff from Eden, Wisconsin who is majoring in Dairy Science with an emphasis in Spanish at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Ms Hodorff has been very active in her local and county 4-H programs participating in numerous activities, especially showing cattle, an officer with the Fond du Lac County Junior Holstein Association and a leader in numerous clubs at Campbellsport High School. On campus she is an active member of the Badger Dairy Club and the Association of Women in Agriculture. In the future, Kalista would like to become a member of the management team at her home dairy and ultimately a part owner.

Anna Tarpey of Wildwood, Missouri who is attending the University of Missouri majoring in Animal Science. Anna has been a leader in 4-H, serving as President, the Community Service Coordinator, and Fundraising Representative. She also owns a poultry and waterfowl breeding and showing operation. In high school she has volunteered for numerous civic events. In college she is a member of the dairy club has worked at the Land O Lakes Purina Animal Research Farm, and served as a Missouri Dairy Ambassador for the Midwest Dairy Association. After receiving her B.S. degree Anna plans to fulfill her long held dream of becoming a large animal veterinarian.

Madeline Zutz of Valders, Wisconsin who is a student at the University of Minnesota majoring in Animal Science. Ms Zutz has been President of her local 4-H Club, an officer in her FFA Chapter, President of the Manitowoc County Junior Holstein Association, on the Valders High School Student Board and a leader in the Manitowoc County 4-H Ambassadors program. In college Madeline is a member of the Gopher Dairy Club, Beta of Clovia Sorority and Block & Bridle. After years of interning with her local veterinarians, Ms Zutz, an excellent student, plans on becoming a large animal veterinarian.

The final recipient is Isabella Portner of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, who is majoring in Dairy Science at Iowa State University. Ms Portner has held leadership roles in the Sleepy Eye FFA Chapter, the Brown County 4-H Federation, and her High School National Honor Society. Isabella served as the Brown County Dairy Princess and as the MN. Brown Swiss Youth Ambassador. In college she belongs to the Dairy Club and serves on the College of Ag & Life Sciences Student Council. Ms Portner wants to obtain her B.S. degree and then obtain a masters degree in dairy genetics, herd management or nutrition

All of these college freshmen have been excellent students and already very active in campus activities with certainly well defined future goals.

The annual National Dairy Shrine Scholarship & Awards Banquet will be held in Madison, Wisconsin, on Thursday October 4th at 5:30 PM.
